Climate Corner

Please don’t put your tree in the landfill!

If you’re like us, you’re just getting around to undecorating your house. Remember, this is an opportunity to recycle! Trees, lawn trimmings, and other biodegradable materials break down slowly due to lack of oxygen caused by landfill waste, creating and adding to emissions that are causing rapid climate change.  For more information, visit Zero Waste DC.

If your household is serviced by the D.C. Department of Public Works, you can place your tree and holiday greenery at your regular point of recycling or place it curbside through February 28, 2022.  In Montgomery County, trees and greenery will be picked up on your normal recycling pick-up day. Be sure to remove all ornaments, lights and trimmings. Wreaths and garlands may be recycled if you remove all metal frames, wires, and plastic parts.

String lights and bulbs may be dropped off with electronic recycling. Some hardware stores will also accept lights and bulbs for recycling. Consider donating working lights to a thrift store. And of course, you can save wrapping paper and ribbons for next year!

Ending Hunger in Our Nation’s Capital

While many of us enjoyed sumptuous culinary treats and traditions over the holidays, food insecurity - defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life - increased more than 50% in the District of Columbia during the Covid pandemic. According to the Capitol Area Food Bank, households seeking food assistance for the first time after March 2020 were 60% more likely to include children, 69% more likely to have a job, and three times as likely to be receiving no government benefits.

2022 Conforming Loan Limits Higher in D.C.

While sellers continue to benefit from increased property values, buyers have also been given a boost in terms of increased conforming loan limits. The new ceiling is $970,800 – an increase over the previous limit of $822,375. Read all about it here.

City Ridge Scheduled for Opening Summer 2022

The historic Fannie Mae campus, a Northwest D.C. icon, has been reimagined as City Ridge. The 1.2 million square foot mixed-use development at 3900 Wisconsin Avenue is expected to begin opening this summer with D.C.’s first Wegmans supermarket anchoring 250,000 square feet of commercial space.
