The Washington Stage Guild: Smart Theatre for a Smart Town

On Sunday afternoon, April 16, Washington Stage Guild is celebrating 37th years of theater with its last performance of the 2022-2023 season - BEN BUTLER by Richard Strand, which is receiving critical praise by The Washington Post. All WSG performances are at the Undercroft Theatre of Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, located in the heart of downtown Washington D.C. The Pesky Pest: Outsmart the Mosquitoes

April showers may bring flowers, but they also provide a watery environment for mosquito larvae to begin hatching in your garden.  You can get ahead of the summer swarm by treating your property now to mitigate this season’s awakening adults and their offspring.  

The first line of defense is to treat soggy planting beds and drains. Clear old mulch and sprinkle a mosquito bits directly onto the soil.  The bits are corn cob granules coated with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, or BTI, which is toxic to mosquitos and fungus gnats, but reportedly safe for edible plants, pets, and children. 

Spartan Mosquito Pro Tech is a sugar bait slow-release device that kills mosquitoes using boric acid. It can be administered now as the weather begins to warm above 50 degrees. The product is packaged in tubes and mixes with warm water.  The tubes are easy to install by hanging two per acre at six feet above ground along the perimeter of the area to be protected and away from areas where people gather, since mosquitoes will gather near them.  Both treatments last for 30 days and should be repeated throughout the warm weather season.

Eliminate standing water on your property and remove anything that catches water and allows it to stagnate - planting containers, outdoor furniture, improperly installed gutters, bird baths, and French drains are a good place to begin. Repair dips in the surface of your patio that hold water after the rain.   

Move or eliminate plants that hold water, such as Hosta and Bromeliads, and replace them with mosquito-repellant varieties:  Allium, Basil, Bee Balm, Catmint, Citronella Geranium, Floss Flower, Lavender, Lemon Grass, Marigold, Rosemary, and Sage.

When laying fresh mulch, consider cedar for the areas closest to your home and outside entertaining areas. Long used as a natural way to repel and inhibit mosquitos and termites, certain ants, moths, and cockroaches, cedar mulch is effective as long as its scent remains.

What’s New at City Ridge?

Completed in 2022, City Ridge, hosts Washington, D.C.’s first Wegmans grocery store, which anchors the back side of the former Fannie Mae headquarters building, and retail includes King Street Oyster Bar, Tatte Bakery & Café, Taco Bamba, an Equinox fitness center, and KinderCare childcare. There are four residential properties with a total of 690 apartments.

Industrious, now the third largest co-working space in the D.C. region, has signed a lease with Roadside Development for 40,000-square-feet that will include 125 offices, 13 conference rooms and 515 standalone desks, rounding out available office leasing activity at City Ridge, which includes the International Baccalaureate’s Global Center for the Americas and the restaurant group CAVA.

Upton Place, adjacent to City Ridge at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Upton Street, and also located in proximity to the Tenleytown-AU Metro station in Cathedral Heights, is transforming a razed office building formerly occupied by Fannie Mae into a mixed-use destination with 689 multifamily residences atop approximately 100,000 square feet of prime retail space and a restored 825-space below-grade parking garage. Completion is scheduled for late 2023.
