The news for sellers in the Washington housing market is rosy.  Bright MLS reports that sales are up 20% year over year for luxury properties in Washington priced between $2.5 and 5 million. A recently published study by Zillow shows that while May has long been the best month to list your house in the U.S., American sellers in 2023 made the highest profits of the year in the first two weeks of June.

Sales results for D.C. area homes listed now could likely follow suit.

Buyers are jumping into the Spring market despite low inventory.  While everybody is looking for a drop in mortgage rates, experts are anticipating fewer and less frequent rate cuts over the next twelve months than reported at the end of last year.  Thirty-year mortgage rates remain around 7%. But even the slightest drop will spur an increase in sales for the late spring/early summer market.

Have you noticed 5 gallon orange and white curbside bins in your neighborhood? The bins were distributed last summer by the D.C. Department of Public Works to residents who registered for the year-long pilot curbside composting program to promote waste diversion from landfills.

Composting has a rich history as a natural process of recycling organic matter such as leaves and vegetable scraps into a valuable fertilizer that can improve soil structure, enhance water retention, and provide essential nutrients to plants. Over time, the practice has evolved from simple farm-based methods to sophisticated urban programs that address waste reduction and sustainability goals.

If you’re not participating in the pilot or on the waiting list, you can wait for the official program to launch later in 2024, or simply take your compost to one of the many drop-off sites in the city.

By upgrading to more efficient models, you not only improve performance but may also be eligible for rebates that can offset the cost​. DCSEU requires that all heating and cooling equipment must be installed by a DC-licensed contractor to qualify for rebates, which can range from $50 up to $700​.

Fighting Hunger Differently

DC Central Kitchen is a pioneering, community-focused non-profit organization that has been combating hunger and creating innovative programs for people in need for more than 35 years. The unique model began with locating and then redistributing unused food around the city. Founder Robert Egger initiated this idea by repurposing excess food from restaurants, caterers, and grocery stores to prepare nutritious meals. Over the years, the organization expanded its operations to include culinary job training, healthy school food, and food distribution to shelters and non-profits.
